Day Programme

Client Profile

The service is suitable for men and women who have decided that their drinking is out of control and causing many life problems. Life problems such as loss of job; isolation (whether physical or emotional) from family; loss of health; loss of emotional well being; loss of financial resources etc. At their assessment they agree to attend all groups initially for two weeks, as well as remain abstinent from alcohol and all other illegal/unnecessary drugs while attending.

Age

Minimum age for the day programme is 18. We have no maximum age but the clients have to be able to travel to and from the centre on a daily basis and be able to attend all groups.

Client Group

The service is suitable for people who are 24 hours or more away from their last drink of alcohol. The service is free for clients who are resident in Redbridge and Waltham Forest. We are commissioned to assess clients who live in Waltham Forest or Redbridge for residential detox if the client is committed to attend the programme at 1 NE after the detox.

Not suitable for:

  • Clients with severe mental illness (details on request)
  • Clients unable or not prepared to be 24 hours dry (after detox)
  • Denial of any problem with alcohol and absence of any desire to look at the underlying issues associated with their addiction
  • Anyone with a history of chronic (multiple) relapse
  • Anyone convicted of arson
  • Anyone convicted of child abuse
  • Those individuals with a history of violence while NOT under the influence of alcohol
  • Anyone who has committed a violent or threatening act towards clients, staff or the general public
  • Family or close friends of existing clients or staff
  • Those whose drug of choice is not alcohol

The above exclusion clauses are guidelines only. Each client is assessed on his/her own merits.

Counselling Philosophy

  • Abstinence based
  • Eclectic approach with counsellors having been trained in different theories facilitating different groups
  • After a non-negotiable first two week full time attendance and a further four weeks full time, individual clients are involved in creating their own programme to suit personal needs
  • Clients are treated in a respectful manner and encouraged to take responsibility for their own recovery

Attendance

Clients initially have to commit to attend two weeks on the full time programme, this is non negotiable. After two weeks they are reassessed and encouraged to continue a further four weeks full time and the opportunity to enter into longer term therapy is discussed. Some clients also take advantage of individual counselling. Some have other commitments and attend part time or join an evening support group.

The majority of clients attend the full time programme for six weeks. After six weeks a gradual 'cutting down' of full time attendance begins. Using a process of weaning off to suit the individual, clients are enabled to take responsibility for their own lives and discouraged from becoming dependent on 1NE, although some clients still attend one support group a week years after stopping drinking.
